This panel explores the global race for transition minerals and its implications for a just transition – focusing on social and environmental risks borne by marginalised communities in the Global South, and the role investors and industry can play in addressing them.

The panel includes perspectives from emerging market policy and trade experts, leading institutional investors with established responsible mining practices, mining companies, and industry standard-setters.

Meet our speakers

Claudia Melim-McLeod is Director at Future Horizons Institute. She has over 20 years’ experience across consulting, research, and advisory roles with organisations including UNDP, UNEP, UNREDD, the African Development Bank, UNECA, Norad, KPMG, and Rainforest Foundation Norway.  Her areas of expertise are climate change, climate and nature-related financial risk, sustainable finance, ESG standards, and political economy analysis. She has worked in over 40 countries and is a former fellow at the University of Edinburgh Business School and the London School of Economics.

Bob Walker
IRMA
Bob is Finance Sector Lead for the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance. For more than three decades Bob has helped lead the development of sustainable investing in think tanks, industry associations and, for twenty years, at a leading Canadian asset manager. He has served on a variety of boards including the International Corporate Governance Network and the International Institute for Sustainable Development. The recipient of numerous industry awards, Bob holds graduate degrees from Dalhousie University and the University of Toronto.

Bhima Yudhistira Adhinegara is the Executive Director of CELIOS, an Indonesia-based economic think tank. He previously worked as an economist and expert staff member at the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and also served as a consultant for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. His research focuses on energy transition, sustainable finance, and the restorative economy.

Daniela da Costa Bulthuis is the Executive Director at Robeco Asset Management. With over 25 years of experience in capital markets, Daniela worked in Brazil and the UK in asset management and investment banking before joining Robeco in 2010. She manages two of Robeco’s sustainable strategies: the Robeco Global Engagement Fund and the Robeco Emerging Markets Climate Transition Fund. In addition to her fund manager role, Daniela represents the fundamental equities team at Robeco’s SDG and Climate and Nature committees. She is also a board member of the Brazilian Investor’s Association (AMEC) and has been an active voice within listed companies in emerging markets for best sustainability and governance practices.

Shahila Perumalpillai
Anglo-American plc
Shahila is Human Rights Principal at Anglo-American with extensive experience in managing risks to business from social and stakeholder issues, including integrating human rights due diligence into business processes. With extensive experience working with the oil and gas and mining sectors, she specialises in Risk Screening and Social Due Diligence for Investments, Social Risk Management in Project Development.

Chaired by Carmen Nuzzo, Professor in Practice and the Executive Director of the TPI Global Climate Transition Centre (TPI Centre).
